Grays Harbor Gulls FC host Lacey FC in WWPL action on Saturday at 4pm at Stewart Field in an important and much anticipated rivalry match.
Lacey won both matches last year, 3-0 and 4-3, on their way to a second place finish in the inaugural WWPL season. This season has been different for Lacey, who have struggled to a 0-1-3 start, and currently are in 9th place. The Gulls are 2-0-2 and in 6th place, tied on 6 points with Crossfire, but trailing on goal differential.
Lacey comes into the match following two losses last weekend. On Saturday, they fell at home to Kirkland 1-0, before getting blown out Sunday in Snohomish, 6-0.
The Gulls won their last competitive match, 2-0 against Harbor Force in the Washington State Super Cup. The win sends them to the semi-finals. A mid-week friendly away with the Oly Town Artesians of EPLWA saw the Gulls drop a competitive match 3-2, but it was a good opportunity for younger players to get minutes. In his first Gulls FC action, forward Enrique Cuevas from Aberdeen found the back of the net for the second Gulls goal of the match.
This match is very important for Grays Harbor if they want to finish above the red line*, securing top flight status for the 2020 WWPL season.
*Top 6 teams in 2019 will start 2020 in the first division, while the bottom 5 teams and new WWPL clubs will compete in the second division.
